The Poster Study
The Poster Study is like a thumbnail sketch used as a guide in the development of a painting from life. It differs from a sketch by being a deeply observed assessment of the dimensions of colour, especially value.
It is called The Poster because it uses flat, averaged areas of colour as in a printed poster. There is no emphasis on accuracy of drawing. However when the colours are accurately recorded it results in an uncanny evocation of a figure in 3D space.
